The New York Liberty take on the Chicago Sky for the second time this week

After squeaking past the Chicago Sky 77-76 just the other night, the New York Liberty will return home to face the Sky once again, but on their own court. The Liberty are 4-1 to start the season after they dropped their first game of the season to the Washington Mystics. They haven’t looked back since, and they were grateful to get the close win against the Sky.

“It was just getting to work and go to my spot,” said Breanna Stewart on her eventual game-winning shot that put the Liberty up by one and gave them the win over Chicago. Stewart has already shown that she fits quite well into the Liberty’s system, quickly emerging as the go-to player on the team.

Stewart is averaging a double-double to start the season (24.4 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 3.4 APG), making a case as the most valuable player on this team.

Are the Liberty satisfied? “Not every game is going to be perfect, and we understand that. But we want it to feel better, and at the same time, winning away from home is incredibly different in this league, so to take this win and move on is the most important part,” said Stewart when asked about the importance of winning “ugly” games like that one.

Now, the Liberty get to move on against the same team.

When asked about what it’s like to play against the same team twice in a row during the regular season, Liberty Head Coach Sandy Brondello said, “It’s like a chess match.” Brondello said that they can work on subtle things like taking what their opponent’s defense did the previous game and using that to see what they can use against them.

The players echoed some of the same sentiments, with Betnijah Laney saying that it’s a bit easier to work on adjustments.

Although Chicago has suffered with injuries to start the season, whether it was before the season started with Isabelle Harrison to just last week with Rebekah Gardner and Morgan Bertsch, the Sky have shown that they are not a team to be messed with. They may be 3-3 to start the season, but they’ve pulled together some solid wins and have looked competitive against teams like the Mystics and, of course, the Liberty.

The Chicago Sky will roll into town and take on the New York Liberty on Sunday, June 4 at 2 pm ET on CBS Sports Network or League Pass in Canada.
